Frankfort to host new Tennis Tourney
This Saturday and Sunday, Frankfort will host the first-ever USTA 2.0 Beginner Championships at East Frankfort Park.
“This is the first time we’ve ever held a state championship just for brand new players. These are adults who just started playing in league competition,” said Kathy Klein, the USTA League Coordinator for Kentucky.
Klein said the tournament welcomes teams from Lexington and Louisville.
“These players are all very excited to be coming to Frankfort. Some are playing in their very first tournament,” she said.
Frankfort was chosen as the site for the inaugural Beginners playoff by the USTA, because there was such a positive response to the much larger Senior League Championships. The Championships brought nearly 600 players to Frankfort each May for the past three years.
Jim McCarty, Co-Director of Frankfort Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Department said he was pleased to see Frankfort’s parks become a sought-after location for tennis tournaments.
“We appreciate the sports tourism dollars that come into the community, but we also like to give people from around the state a chance to see Frankfort as a fun and healthy city.”
