SWIMMING

Nitz receives national honor

Wheaton College freshman Kirsten Nitz was selected by collegeswimming.com as the Counsilman Hunmaker Swimmer of the Week for Division III for the first week of November.

Nitz set a school record in the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 51.53 to top Katherine Burt’s school record by a tenth of a second.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Nitz came home in 55.29 seconds, six seconds ahead of the field and two seconds ahead of Grace Johnson’s school record.

The time was also good for an automatic NCAA selection. Nitz was also part of Wheaton’s 200-yard medley relay that took first against Calvin Nov. 3.

Nitz won the 100-yard butterfly by three seconds with a time of 56.34 and also won the 200-yard free style with a time of 1:53.74 in a dual with UW-Milwaukee Nov. 2.

Nitz, a graduate of Western Hills, is the first Wheaton swimmer to earn the award since Tyler Dobelbower in December of 2004.
