Flyers drop two games at Gateway

MOUNT STERLING – Franklin County’s boys basketball team dropped two games in the Gateway Holiday Classic Thursday and Friday at Montgomery County High School.
Fleming County edged FCHS 59-57 Friday.
The Flyers led at the first two quarter breaks – 16-11 after the first period and 32-24 at halftime – but Fleming County cut the lead to 44-43 after three quarters.
Rylan Rowe led Franklin County with 19 points, and Lorenzo McCaskell finished with 17 points.
Rounding out the scoring for FCHS were Chris Roberts and Conner Meyer with six points each, Quenton Brownlee with four points, Rontez Mitchell with three, and Ryan Schneider with two points.
Fleming County was led in scoring by Austin Crisp with 20 points.
In their tournament opener Thursday the Flyers fell to Edgewater (Fla.) 92-54.
Edgewater took a 23-15 lead after the first quarter and was ahead 49-28 at halftime.
Rowe scored a game-high 28 points for the Flyers, followed by McCaskell with seven points, Roberts with six, Brownlee and Schneider with five points each, Cooper Giles with two, and Taylor Walston with one point.

Juniper hosting New Year’s scramble
Juniper Hill’s annual New Year’s Day Scramble will be Tuesday starting at noon.
Three to nine holes will be played depending on the weather, followed by food and fellowship.
The entry fee is a canned food item that will be donated to the Salvation Army.

Volunteers needed for tournament
Sport Ambassador volunteers are needed for Frankfort Convention Center’s 2013 events.
As an ambassador, volunteers will receive free admission to all sporting events and a shirt to be worn while volunteering.
The events include the Kentucky Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic Jan. 23-27 and the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball National Championship March 13-19.

Elks Hoop Shoot is Jan. 6
Frankfort Elks No. 530 will hold its local Hoop Shoot contest on Sunday, Jan. 6 at Frankfort High’s F.D. Wilkinson gym on Ewing Street.
The event is open to boys and girls 8-13. The 8-9 year olds will shoot at 1 p.m., 10-11 year olds at 2 p.m., and 12-13 at 3 p.m.
Participants will shoot as of their age on April 1, 2013. Bring a copy of the shooter’s birth certificate; without it they may not be able to advance to the next level.
