Frankfort High’s girls basketball team captured the championship of the seventh annual Bobcat Classic this past weekend on Hilton Head Island, S.C.
The Lady Panthers (8-3) won three games in the tournament with their closest victory being 12 points in the final.
FHS’ Shauntae Brown was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, and BriAnna Burbridge was named to the all-tournament team.
“I am so very proud of my Panther family’s efforts from the parents getting us here to the efforts of the girls on such a big stage,” FHS coach Deron Norman said. “I truly believe that we took a giant step as a team and a program.”
Frankfort returns to action Thursday at Williamstown.
Following is a recap of the Lady Panthers’ tournament games.
Douglass (Ga.) 45
Down 17-7 in the first quarter, Frankfort rallied to take a 24-20 halftime lead and ended Saturday’s game with a 20-9 fourth quarter.
Burbridge had 15 points, Jasmine Washington had 10, Shanae Brown had 10 points and 13 rebounds, and Shauntae Brown had nine points, nine assists and eight steals.
Brewbaker Tech (Ala.) 50
The Lady Panthers faced an undefeated team and one ranked in the top 25 in Alabama in the semifinals Friday.
Following a tight first half FHS took control with a 23-11 third quarter and 24-11 fourth quarter. Burbridge led Frankfort with 28 points and nine rebounds.
Washington had 18 points and Shauntae Brown had 11 points and 12 assists.
Glynn Academy (Ga.) 32
In their tournament opener Thursday, the Lady Panthers faced Glynn Academy of Georgia.
In a very tight game at the end of the third, FHS posted a 22-4 fourth quarter to pull away. Burbridge was Frankfort’s leading scorer with 14 points, and she also had nine steals.
Shanae Brown had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Shauntae Brown had eight points, 10 assists and seven steals.
