Newton finishes third at King of the Hill

Keegan Newton, 32, who races for the Louisville Ski Club, won third place in his age division at the King of the Hill at Perfect North Slopes Feb. 24.

A total of four different types of race courses are averaged together for the best time.


White selected to try out for Junior All-Stars

Franklin County’s Nannilena White was one of the 40 junior girls basketball standouts in Kentucky selected to try out for the Kentucky/Indiana Junior All-Stars series, the Kentucky Lions Eye Foundation has announced.

Tryouts will be held in conjunction with the senior tryouts March 23 and 24 at Georgetown College.

The Kentucky portion of the junior series will be held Friday, June 7 at a location in Louisville to be announced.


Benassi honored for merchandising

Carmello Benassi Jr., the PGA golf pro at Barren River Lake State Resort Park, has been honored by the Kentucky Section of the PGA of America as Merchandiser of the Year (resort) during its annual meeting in Lexington

Benassi, who has worked at Barren River since May 2011, was recognized for his skills in merchandising techniques, training, displays, inventory mix and shop operations.

Benassi has been a PGA professional for more than 20 years. He has previously received PGA honors such as the National Growth of Game award 2004, Kentucky Teacher of the Year 2005, Kentucky Merchandiser of the Year (Public) 2006 and Kentucky Golf Professional of the Year in 2009.

A graduate of Franklin County High School, Benassi played on the Western Kentucky University golf team from 1974-1978.

Dawson joins 1,000-Point Club

Senior guard Patrick Dawson joined the Kentucky State 1,000-Point Club with a 3-pointer with 2:30 left in the second half against Stillman College Feb. 23.

The Thorobreds defeated Stillman 90-77 at the Exum Center.

Rowe named to all-tourney team

Franklin County junior guard Rylan Rowe was named to the 11th Region all-tournament team.

Rowe scored 21 points in the Flyers’ 85-49 loss to Madison Central in the first round of the tournament.

Madison Central went on to win the 11th Region, cruising past Lexington Catholic 67-46 Saturday night in the championship game.

Howard earns Mid-South conference honors

Andrea Howard, a junior guard on Georgetown College’s women’s basketball team, has been named second team all-conference in the Mid-South Conference.

Howard was also named academic all-conference. She is a graduate of Franklin County High School.

KABC announces year-end honors

The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches has announced its players and coaches of the year for boys basketball in each of the state’s 16 regions.

In the 11th Region, which includes the local high schools, Madison Central’s Dominique Hawkins was named player of the year, and Wes Scarberry, who led Model to a 23-7 record, was named coach of the year.
