The Franklin County Flyers JV team won its first game of the season Thursday night against the Danville Admirals. Controlling the game from the beginning to the end, the Flyers won 7-1.
The Flyers scored early and often. The first goal of the game came just six minutes in when freshman David McIver scored from the back post on an assist from Jonathan Medina.
The Flyers next goal was scored by freshman Curtis Green off a throw-in with 25:25 remaining in the game. Less than 10 minutes later, the Flyers scored their third goal of the game, when freshman Cy Layson’s 15-foot shot found the back of the net on an assist from Hayden Wilkerson, also a freshman.
The Admirals remained scoreless until the 7:35 mark of the first half when Isaiah Scott scored their lone goal of the game. The Flyers led at the half 3-1.
The second half was a battle of the defenses until Green scored from within a few feet of the goal making the score 4-1 with 24 minutes remaining.
At the 10:10 mark, freshman Hayden Cammack found the back of the net on an assist from Matthew Melton, one of the middle school players on the squad.
Three minutes later, sophomore Austin Spencer kicked a hard ball to the Admiral goalie who bobbled the ball, allowing freshman Zach Green to finish for the score.
With only 10 seconds remaining in the contest, Melton dribbled from mid-field to the goal for the Flyers final goal of the game.
Seventh grader Mason Parritt was in the goal for the Flyers.
“We controlled the game from the start getting two early goals. With great pressure on the ball, we were able to control the middle of the field and create a lot of opportunities as the score reflected,” JV coach Jason Adkins said. “Our defense did a great job distributing the ball up the wings. I was really proud of our effort and sportsmanship. Definitely an A-plus game.”
The Flyers (1-1) travel to Winchester Tuesday night to play George Rogers Clark.
