Frankfort junior Maggie Smith scored a goal and earned an assist to help the Lady Panthers to a 2-0 win over Carroll County Monday at Sower Soccer Complex.
Smith broke a 0-0 stalemate in the second half when she hit the ball into the goal from an assist by Logan Amburgey to give Frankfort a 1-0 advantage.
“It was senior night and I think they were focused on other things,” FHS coach Adam Saunderson said of the first half. “I let them know I was unhappy with the first half performance. The second half they applied themselves much better.
“Logan Amburgey had a great through ball over the top of the defense and Maggie just got on the end of it and blew it away.”
Later, Smith sent a ball to freshman teammate Adrienne Carter, who booted it in for the 2-0 score with 1:26 left in the game.
Carter’s goal secured the Lady Panthers’ victory.
Senior Maya Burke recorded the shutout in goal for the Lady Panthers. Senior Nikki States manned the goal for Carroll County.
“Carroll County defended well,” Saunderson said. “We beat them 8-0 at their place last week and they obviously made some adjustments. They were ready for us and their keeper had some great saves.”
Frankfort will graduate five seniors — Burke, Tika Shaw, Beth Edwards, Shian Washington and Leslee Ellis.
“I’m glad to get a win on senior night, that’s the important thing,” Saunderson said. “I thought they did a great job. They are a good group of girls. I enjoy coaching them. They are very dedicated and they play well together.”
The Lady Panthers (6-3-1) play Seneca 5:30 p.m. today at Sower Soccer Complex.
