finishes 2nd in national meet
Franklin County High School graduate Robert Sandlin, a senior at Bellarmine University, finished second in the 35th annual National Catholic Cross Country Invitational Friday in South Bend, Ind.
Sandlin covered the 8,000 meters in 24 minutes, 58.8 seconds and was the top non-Division I finisher.
The race consisted of universities throughout all divisions and was scored as Division I and non-Division I.
Sandlin finished behind Sam Penzenstadler of Loyola (Ill.) by three seconds.
“Rob ran the race plan to perfection and put himself in a position to win the race,” Bellarmine coach Jim Vargo said. “Notre Dame is a top 20 D-I program and Rob ran down their lead pack and was on the front end with a mile to go. He just ran out of real estate to catch the winner at the end.”
The Knights finished fourth out of 22 non-Division I teams.
Bellarmine’s next meet is the 12th annual Greater Louisville Meet Oct. 5 at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
