Kentucky State’s men’s basketball team opened its season with an exhibition game Saturday against IUPUI in Indianapolis.
IUPUI, an NCAA Div. I team, defeated KSU 85-73. The Jaguars led 44-31 at halftime.
Junior guards Khufu Najee and Ian Chiles both scored 22 points to lead IUPUI.
KSU had five players in double figures — Brandon Darrett, Ulysses Thomas III and Markus Montague with 12 points each, Johntae Alexander with 11, and Quentin Henderson with 10.
Henderson had a game-high six assists, and Dorian Jordan had four steals for the Thorobreds, who held a 13-6 edge in steals.
The Jaguars outrebounded KSU 40-26, with Donovan Gibbs and Marcellus Barksdale both grabbing nine boards. Darrett and Montague both had six rebounds to lead K-State.
IUPUI shot 54.2 percent from the field, and the Thorobreds shot 45.5 percent.
KSU was whistled for 29 fouls, and Thomas and Muhammad Cross both fouled out. The Jaguars had 16 fouls.
Kentucky State plays its first regular-season game at home Friday, hosting Asbury University. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
