Boys Basketball: WHHS comes up short against Model

By Nate Parsons, Published:

Western Hills came up short once again.

After falling to Frankfort in the closing seconds the night before, WHHS lost another close one, 71-66 to Richmond Model Saturday night at Lapsley Cardwell Gymnasium.

After trailing by 13 at halftime and 16 midway through the third quarter, the Wolverines (2-14) climbed back into the game. They closed the gap to three with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter after a bucket from senior Kory Waller.

The Patriots (13-4) regained a little cushion when sophomore Ephraim Otieno made it 67-60 with under a minute to go. But the Wolverines didn’t go away, as sophomore Keaton Anderson scored twice before Waller converted with 17.3 seconds left to make it 69-66.

That’s as close as WHHS would get, however, as senior Caleb Kincaid made two free throws with 13 seconds left for the final margin.

Otieno had 24 points and senior Keith Mason added 21 points and five rebounds for the Patriots, who took control in the second quarter by outscoring the Wolverines 25-6. Senior Jared Adams scored 10 points.

Waller hit five 3-pointers and finished with 28 points — 23 combined in the first and third quarters — and five rebounds for the Wolverines, who led for most of the first quarter. Senior Kyle Fisher had 13 points — nine in the first quarter — and five rebounds and Anderson grabbed seven rebounds.

WHHS goes to Woodford County for a district game Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

WESTERN HILLS (66) — Patrick Foley 5, ZhaVaughn Reed 5, Macaulay Hurst 2, Chase Mahoney 4, Kory Waller 28, Keaton Anderson 6, Dylan Jones 3, Kyle Fisher 13.
