Girls Basketball: WHHS’ big 2nd half is enough

Lady Wolverines outscore Lady Panthers by 21 points to win third straight

Western Hills got a big win over Frankfort Friday night.

WHHS used a dominant second half, outscoring FHS 40-19 during that time, to roll to a 58-42 win in 41st District play at Lapsley Cardwell Gymnasium.

It was the third straight win for the Lady Wolverines (10-5, 2-2). They avenged a nine-point, early-season loss to the Lady Panthers (6-12, 1-5), who have lost five straight.

“It feels good to get the win,” WHHS coach Buddy Ritchie said. “It was so big for the (district tournament) seeding.

“I’m so proud of the girls tonight. ... We had some kids hit some big shots, we had some kids on the floor tonight.”

Trailing by five at halftime, the Lady Wolverines scored the first 11 points of the third quarter to take the lead for good. Sophomore Taylor Slade hit two 3-pointers, sandwiched around a 3 from sophomore LaKenzie Ritchie and a bucket from senior Jenna Harrod, to make it 29-23.

WHHS outscored FHS 16-4 in the third quarter to take a 34-27 lead.

“Probably the best third quarter we’ve played,” coach Ritchie said.

The Lady Wolverines’ margin reached double digits midway through the fourth quarter after two free throws from Harrod. The Lady Panthers never got closer than nine the rest of the way.

“I thought our kids really stepped up tonight and just stuck with it,” said coach Ritchie, whose team made 14-of-18 free throws in the fourth quarter and finished 20 for 31 from the line.

Playing a huge role in the Lady Wolverines’ second-half dominance was Slade, as she scored all 17 of her points during that time. Ritchie had 14 points and five rebounds.

“I think she was very hyper tonight (in the first half),” coach Ritchie said of Slade, “but she came back in the second half and she knocked down 4 of 9 from the 3-point land and it was huge. Once she hits one or two, it’s a confidence thing with her.”

Senior Cori Cunningham was the lone double-figure scorer for the Lady Panthers with 10 points. Sophomore BriAnna Burbridge had eight points and 14 rebounds and sophomore Jasmine Turpin added seven points and 11 rebounds.

WHHS is at Woodford County for another district game Tuesday at 8:15 p.m. FHS hosts Lexington Christian in the 11th Region All “A” Classic Wednesday at 6 p.m.
