Two big runs at the start of both halves were all Franklin County’s girls basketball team needed to beat Bardstown Friday at FCHS.
The Lady Flyers started the game with a 17-2 run and the second half with 12 straight points, and they went on to win 68-42.
“The balance was pretty good, especially in the first half when we had three players in double figures,” FCHS coach Joey Thacker said. “We did a good job of attacking them on defense and turning it into offense.”
Franklin County (14-3) jumped out to a 31-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and held Bardstown (7-10) to nine points in the second period.
FCHS led 47-21 at halftime and opened the third quarter with a 12-0 run, giving the Lady Flyers their largest lead of the game at 38 points, 59-21.
Thacker substituted liberally after that, and Franklin County had 10 players in the scoring column, led by Malaka Frank with 17 points. No one played fewer than four minutes for FCHS.
“Malaka did a nice job of going to the rim,” Thacker said. “Rebecca (Cook) had another double-double, and that was good to see.”
Cook finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots, and Anna Arrastia was also in double figures with 11 points.
The Lady Flyers had 23 steals to just three for Bardstown, and they forced the Lady Tigers into 26 turnovers while turning the ball over just eight times.
BreAsia Spalding was Bardstown’s leading scorer with 14 points, and Caresha Allen finished with 11.
FCHS was scheduled to play Magoffin County in the Berea College Showcase Saturday, but that event was canceled.
Franklin County’s next game is at home Wednesday against Cooper, and the Lady Flyers begin play in the Louisville Invitational Tournament Friday.
“It’s been hard to get into any kind of flow with the weather affecting practice time,” Thacker said. “We’ve only had six practices since Christmas, and we need more time on the floor to get ready for the tournament.”
