Two local swimmers each won two events, advancing to the state swim meet in two weeks.
Franklin County’s Charlie Starzman and Western Hills’ Sydney Sell, both juniors, won both of their individual events at the Region 3 swim meet Saturday at the Russell County Natatorium in Russell Springs.
Both swimmers also set regional records — Starzman in the 100-yard breaststroke and Sell in the 100-yard backstroke. Starzman was also named the swimmer of the meet.
“I’ve been training pretty hard,” Starzman said. “I was feeling pretty good going into the meet. All the credit goes to God and Jesus Christ.”
Starzman’s winning time in the breaststroke was 59.96 seconds, and he won the 200 IM in 2:00.41.
“They were really close races,” he said. “I won both of them by less than a second.”
His times were personal records in both races.
“My goal at region was to try and make it to state,” he said, “and I reached that.”
Sell successfully defended her regional titles in the 100 backstroke and 100-yard freestyle.
She broke the regional record she set last year in the 100 backstroke by nearly two seconds.
Her winning time was 55.31 seconds, and last year she set the record with a time of 57.07.
“I really didn’t feel as good going into the meet,” Sell said. “I haven’t tapered at all. I’ve been training pretty hard for the last few weeks to get ready for a meet in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee.”
That meet is scheduled for early March.
“Honestly I wasn’t expecting those times,” Sell said. “I didn’t think I’d break my 100 backstroke record by two seconds.”
Sell won the 100 freestyle in 52.85 seconds, and she won both races by about two seconds.
“They weren’t my best times,” she said, “but breaking the regional record was good enough for me.”
The regional meet started Friday with preliminaries, and the finals took place Saturday.
The top two finishers in each event at the regional meet advance to the state meet Feb. 28-March 1 at the University of Louisville’s Ralph Wright Natatorium.
The next 14 fastest times from the state at-large will also advance to state.
