Going out with a bang and a medal

Franklin County senior places at state to close out wrestling career

LEXINGTON — Franklin County senior Frederick Agyeman left the state high school wrestling tournament with a medal and no regrets.

Agyeman finished sixth in the 160-pound weight class Saturday at Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.

“I tried as hard as I could,” Agyeman said. “In some matches the other guy was better than myself, and I couldn’t do anything about it.

“I think that’s why I don’t feel as bad. I know I tried.”

“That’s the kind of kid he is,” FCHS coach Zac Donnelly said. “He always gives 100 percent. I’m real proud of him.”

Agyeman was one of 12 local wrestlers to qualify for the state tournament. Nine of the wrestlers were eliminated in Friday’s rounds, with Agyeman and teammates Corey Jacobs and Denwan Hall advancing to Saturday.

Agyeman won two matches in the championship bracket Friday and faced Simon Kenton’s Casey Cornett in the quarterfinals.

Cornett, who finished as state runner-up, won the match 7-4.

“He was leading by one when I went to cut him,” Agyeman said, “but he got my leg and got a takedown so that didn’t work so well.

“I guess it’s good to see the guy who beat me in the finals.”

The loss put Agyeman in the consolation bracket. He was leading 9-4 in his first consolation match when Scott High’s Sam Schwachter retired with an injury.

He followed that by pinning Hopkinsville’s Nate Williams and then faced North Oldham’s Mitch Rusch, who defeated Agyeman 10-0 last week in the finals of the Region 5 tournament.

This time Rusch took a 12-7 decision, putting Agyeman in the match for fifth place.

In the fifth-place match Johnson Central’s Jordan Young won with a 9-3 decision.

“Sixth place wasn’t what I was hoping for,” Agyeman said, “but for my first time placing at state, I can go with sixth.”

Donnelly was pleased with Agyeman’s showing at state.

“It’s a great accomplishment to be able to place at state, to be one of the top six in the state,” Donnelly said. “He’s worked hard all year.

“He had a real close match and nearly made to the semis. He’s a hard worker, the kind of kid you’d like to have for a whole team. He’s always in a good mood, and he keeps the younger kids working hard.”

Hall came into Saturday’s action with a 2-1 record and faced Boone County’s Ahmad Hameidan. Hall was leading 7-6 but was called for stalling with a second left, and that tied the match at 7.

Hameidan won the match in sudden victory, which is essentially a four-overtime win.

“Denwan wrestled a good match,” Donnelly said. “He’s probably our most improved, especially from last year. He went from not placing in the region to being regional champion, and he was one match away from placing at state.”

Jacobs, who was also 2-1 after Friday’s matches, lost 15-0 to Campbell County’s Brad Krebs Saturday.

Western Hills’ Josh Morris competed at state and was eliminated during Friday’s matches.

The other FCHS state competitors were Bailey Bixler, Marcus Bucerzan, Aaron Valentine, Dmitri Hubbard, Mick Marshall, Kyle Perkins, John Blythe and Francisco Perez.

Agyeman, Bucerzan, Hubbard, Marshall and Perkins are seniors.

“Unfortunately we didn’t wrestle our best tournament,” Donnelly said. “We had a really good week last week, but here you’re facing the best of the best.

“For a few of them, I think it was a little bit nerves, being their first time here and not knowing what to expect.

“For the guys who aren’t seniors, this was a great experience for them, and hopefully it’ll motivate them for next year.”
