BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — With a 73-62 victory over Albany State Thursday night, the Kentucky State men’s basketball team has reached the semifinals of the SIAC Basketball Championship Tournament.
The Thorobreds, the No. 3 seed out of the West Division, will face Tuskegee tonight at 7:45 (CT) in the semifinals.
The Golden Tigers are the No. 1 seed in the West and advanced to the semifinals with an 80-72 win over Miles College.
Albany State (15-13) built a 9-0 lead Thursday before a 3-pointer from Ulysses Thomas III gave KSU its first bucket of the game.
Kentucky State took its first lead of the game when Darrien Wilkins converted a fast-break layup to put KSU ahead, 16-15, with 10:11 left in the first period.
KSU (15-13) led 31-27 at halftime, but Albany State rallied early in the second half, tying the game at 41 with 12:20 remaining.
K-State responded with a 7-0 run on two baskets from Troy Adams and a jumper and free throw from Thomas.
The Thorobreds kept the lead the rest of the way. ASU pulled within three points at 65-62 with 2:03 remaining, but the Golden Rams didn’t score again.
KSU shot 46 percent from the field and hit 45.5 percent (5 for 11) from 3-point range while limiting Albany State to 35 percent shooting.
Five Thorobreds were in double figures, led by Antonio Sullivan with 15 points. Sullivan went 3 for 5 on 3-point shots.
Brandon Darrett finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, his 11th of the season, and Thomas chipped in 12 points and handed out four assists.
Adams went 6 for 10 from the field and scored 13 points, and Wilkins had 10.
Darquell Pulliam had five assists, and Darrett blocked four shots.
Larry Bullock led Albany State with 13 points.
