Western Hills’ rally fell short Tuesday as Shelby County rode a big first inning to a 6-3 victory in softball action at WHHS.
The Lady Rockets (3-6) took control of the game with four runs in the first inning on five singles and a double.
WHHS (1-8) threatened in the bottom of the first, loading the bases on an error, a walk and a single by Torey Hawkins, but the next two batters were out on a fly ball to right field and a line drive to shortstop.
Shelby added a run in third with a double, an error and a sacrifice fly, and the Lady Rockets went ahead 6-0 in the fourth inning on a single and an error.
Western Hills scored all its runs in the seventh inning.
Meghan Yount led off with a single and moved to third on groundouts by Brandi Cook and Destiny Hyatt.
LaKenzie Ritchie doubled, driving Yount home with the Lady Wolverines’ first run, and Taylor Slade followed with a two-run home run to close out the scoring.
Torey Hawkins was the Lady Wolverines’ starting pitcher and went five innings with Slade finishing the game in relief.
Getting hits for WHHS were Torey Hawkins with two singles, Slade with a home run, Ritchie with a double, and Sierra Miley, Yount and Hyatt each with a base hit.
Western Hills plays today at Mercer County.
