On May 10, 60 people were slated to play in the Hawkins Cup at the Frankfort Country Club, a Ryder Cup style golf tournament which canceled because of rain.
The annual tournament benefits the Bert Hawkins Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is open to a graduating senior from any of the three Franklin County public schools who is attending college and participated on their high school’s golf team.
At the luncheon for the tournament, Sidney Cardwell and Chase Mahoney were each awarded $500 scholarships.
Cardwell was on the Western Hills golf team for six years and was the captain her senior year. She was also on the varsity dance team and was senior class president.
She will be attending the University of Kentucky and majoring in chemistry – pre-pharmacy.
Mahoney was on the Western Hills golf team for four years and was the captain his senior year. He has been KHSAA all-state academic team for the last three years on the golf team.
He will be attending the UK and majoring in food acience.
Cardwell and Mahoney were chosen by the directors of the scholarship foundation based upon their number of years on the golf team, GPA, coaches recommendation, work ethic, sportsmanship and the applicant’s essay.
The scholarship is for the use of the winners in their college endeavors.
