Free fishing events across state set for Saturday

Special to The State Journal Published:

A series of special free fishing events for kids are being held across the state Saturday.

The events are a celebration of Kentucky’s free fishing weekend. Every year during the first full weekend of June, anglers do not need a fishing license or even a trout permit. Normally, people over the age of 15 must have a license to fish away from their property.

Normal size limits and creel limits for fish still apply during free fishing weekend, however.

Here are the events planned in Franklin County:

Kids Fishing Derby, 5-9 p.m. Friday and 7-11 a.m. Saturday, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources’ main campus, 1 Sportsman’s Lane. Lower lake will remain open during daylight hours for all anglers. Upper lake will close to fishing Friday, except that anglers 15 and under only may fish in the lake from 5-9 p.m.

Upper lake will be open for youth fishing only from 7-11 a.m. Saturday. The lake will reopen to all anglers after 11. Both lakes will receive special stockings of catfish and hybrid bluegill. Anglers should bring fishing equipment and bait.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Department DARE Fishing Derby, 8-11 a.m., Hope Community Church, 5930 U.S. 127. This event is for kids 15 and under. There will be special stocking of fish and a cookout at noon.
