Nitz named Academic

Wheaton (Ill.) College sophomore Kirsten Nitz has been selected to the At-Large Capital One Academic All-America Team for Division III. Nitz is a first team Academic All-American selection.
Nitz, a graduate of Western Hills High School, is a French and applied health science double major at Wheaton and held a 3.73 cumulative grade-point average this past year.
She is a four-time NCAA Division III champion in swimming with titles in the 100-yard butterfly in 2013 and 2014 and championships in the 50-yard freestyle and the 200-yard backstroke in 2013.
Nitz has set two NCAA National Division III records in the 50-yard freestyle (2013) and 100-yard butterfly (2014).
In both of her seasons at Wheaton she has been a two-time winner of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin’s Female Swimmer of the Year award.
Nitz is an 11-time CCIW champion with five conference titles in individual events and five relay titles in two seasons at Wheaton.
She holds six individual Wheaton school records and is part of five school-record relay teams.
Nitz is currently in Antibes, France, taking courses in French language study.

Howard named
first team all-state

Kara Howard, who graduated from Franklin County High School Sunday, has been named first team all-state by the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association.
This is the second year in a row Howard has earned first team honors. She was named second team all-state as a sophomore.
Howard was selected as an East Senior All-Star and will take part in all-star games this weekend at Ballard High School in Louisville.
Franklin County assistant coach Butch Turner is on the coaching staff for the Junior East All-Stars.

Locals named to regional
all-tourney team

Western Hills’ Thomas Bennett and Zack Barker and Franklin County’s Quenton Brownlee were named to the 11th Region all-tournament baseball team.
Bennett just completed his freshman year at WHHS, and Barker and Brownlee graduated Sunday.
Brownlee has also been selected to play in the Kentucky East-West All-Star game to be played June 17 at Dunbar High School.
