FCHS’ Kara Howard and Quenton Brownlee named All-County MVPs

Franklin County’s Kara Howard picked up where she left off last season.

The Flyers’ Quenton Brownlee became a double threat as a pitcher and shortstop.

Howard and Brownlee have been named the Most Valuable Players of The State Journal All-County Softball Team and All-County Baseball Team. Both players were seniors this season.

This is the second consecutive year Howard has been named MVP.

Howard was the Lady Flyers’ leading hitter with a .425 batting average. She was also FCHS’ only pitcher this season, compiling a 29-9 record in the circle.

Franklin County ended the season at 29-9 in the finals of the 11th Region Tournament.

Brownlee batted .367 this season for the 14-23 Flyers, who came on late to win the 41st District Tournament. He went 5-5 as a pitcher.

Here are the members of the All-County teams.

Zack Barker, WHHS
Barker, a senior pitcher/infielder, hit .355 for the 17-14 Wolverines with 14 runs batted in, 22 hits and eight runs.
He logged 32 2/3 innings pitching, compiling a 2-1 record and a 3.86 earned run average. He struck out 46 batters.

Thomas Bennett, WHHS
A freshman shortstop, Bennett hit .299 with 16 RBI and 20 hits. He stole nine bases and had a fielding percentage of .879.

Quenton Brownlee, FCHS
Brownlee drove in 14 runs this season while hitting 19 extra-base hits — 12 doubles, five triples and two home runs.
He had a 2.55 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 60 innings of work on the mound.

Jesse Howard, WHHS
The Wolverines’ sophomore catcher hit .319 with 23 hits and 12 RBI, and he had a fielding percentage of .968.

Michael Hurt, FCHS
Hurt, a senior pitcher for the Flyers, threw a no-hitter against Owen County, a 8-3 victory on Senior Night May 5.
Hurt struck out four in that game and didn’t give up a walk.

Rylan Rowe, FCHS
A senior outfielder for the Flyers, Rowe hit .306 with six doubles, one home run, seven RBI and 24 runs.

Dre Scott, FHS
Scott, a senior, had a .386 batting average, driving in 16 runs and scoring 25 runs. He was 14-for-14 on stolen base attempts.
Scott had a 3-3 record pitching with a 1.97 ERA and one save. He struck out 44 batters.

Jared Stephens, FHS
 Stephens, a junior, led the 11-14 Panthers with a .392 batting average. He had 17 RBI and scored 11 runs, and he stole five bases in five attempts.
On the mound he compiled a 1-1 record and a 1.91 ERA with one save and 11 strikeouts.

Kyle Stevens, WHHS
A senior pitcher/infielder, Stevens batted .337 for Western Hills with 15 RBI, 28 hits and seven stolen bases.
He pitched 31 2/3 innings with a 4.42 ERA and 2-2 record with 31 strikeouts.

Dawson Willis, FCHS
Willis, a junior catcher, batted .296 with 29 hits, nine doubles and 21 RBI.

Taylor Addams, FHS
Used primarily at pitcher, Addams hit .534 for the Lady Panthers.
The junior had 10 stolen bases and a .875 fielding percentage.

Whitney Edwards, FCHS
Edwards, a senior second baseman, hit .345 with 27 RBI, two home runs and eight doubles.
She had a fielding percentage of .929 with 79 putouts and 51 assists.

Torey Hawkins, WHHS
A junior pitcher/first baseman, Hawkins batted .287 with 10 doubles and 17 RBI. She had a .987 fielding percentage and 127 putouts.

Kara Howard, FCHS
The senior pitcher batted .425 with eight home runs, five doubles, three triples and 39 RBI.
Throwing every pitch of the season for the Lady Flyers, Howard had a 29-9 record with a 1.84 ERA and 11 shutouts. She struck out 205 batters and walked 21 in 247 innings of work, and she committed just one error for a fielding percentage of .990.

Destiny Hyatt, WHHS
The Lady Wolverines’ junior shortstop, Hyatt batted .326 with 29 hits and 17 runs scored. She had a .394 on-base percentage and 55 assists.

Shelby Sanders, FCHS
The senior shortstop hit .324 with 33 RBI, three home runs, nine doubles and four triples. She stole 10 bases.
At shortstop she had 55 putouts and 65 assists.

Taylor Slade, WHHS
A sophomore pitcher/first baseman, Slade hit .357 with a .607 slugging percentage. She had five home runs and 19 RBI.
Her fielding percentage was .985, and her ERA was 2.48.

Sydney Wiard, FCHS
Wiard took over at catcher this season, and the sophomore batted .330 with 32 RBI and nine doubles. She had a fielding percentage of .897.

Tori Zeigler, FCHS
The senior outfielder batted .256 with 14 RBI and nine stolen bases in nine attempts.
She hit five doubles and had 40 putouts from her centerfield position.
