Franklin County’s cross country team begins its season Aug. 30 at the St. Xavier Tiger Run in Louisville.
The Flyers will begin their second year under the guidance of coaches Robin and David Lawhorn, who took over the program last year.
The Lawhorns look to build on the successes of last year, where the girls team qualified for the KHSAA state championship meet, and to help the boys team become a group that could be one of the top teams in Region IV.
“Robin and I are looking forward to the season and looking to build on what the team accomplished last year,” David Lawhorn said. “We have a good group of athletes returning that with summer training should be ready for the challenge of continuing the success from last season.”
One of the team goals this season is to have both teams advance to the state meet. Last year the Lady Flyers placed 23rd at state.
“Our boys team returns four athletes who competed at the KHSAA Region IV AA meet and the girls team returns five members from the state qualifying team,” Robin Lawhorn said.
“We have a group of young athletes who are showing promise in practice and this will help our whole team develop as the season progresses.”
The Flyers will host the 39th annual Franklin County Invitational Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington
Top returning male runners from the 2013 team are senior Kyle Kremer, the boys team captain, and sophomore Dylan Isaacs, who both placed in the top five of the county championships last year.
Top returning runners from last year’s girls team are junior Ashley Lawhorn, winner of the 2013 county championships, first team all-region and second team all-state; junior Kirsten Pilcher, who finished in the top five at the county championships; senior Kater Riddle, girls team captain; senior Taylor Bochantin and junior Jamie Beason.
