Healthy lifestyle coach Shellie Wingate has partnered with the National Diabetes Prevention Program to offer a Type 2 diabetes prevention program to Kentuckians. Participants of PreventT2 must be 18 years or older, overweight and previously diagnosed with prediabetes or at risk of developing Type 2.
The program cost is covered for Kentucky Employee Health Plan members, which includes all state government employees, public school employees and covered family members. Participants will work with Wingate through an online forum to gain lifestyle habits she says are proven to significantly lower chances of developing Type 2 diabetes.
Prediabetes is characterized by higher than normal blood glucose levels. According to Wingate, 1 in 3 Americans has prediabetes. PreventT2 is based on research showing that prediabetes patients who lost 5% to 7% of their body weight reduced their chances of developing Type 2 diabetes by 58 percent.
“PreventT2 is a 12-month program where participants will receive daily curriculum through email to keep them engaged,” said Wingate. “Curriculum includes tips on how to prevent overeating, include physical activity in your daily life. It’s small steps that slowly build to a bigger change.”
Wingate began coaching PreventT2 in 2015. It is currently the only online diabetes prevention program offered in Kentucky, she said. Members become part of an online community, where they can receive support from other participants and Wingate.
“We don’t ask for perfection and you’re not slammed into a restrictive diet,” said Wingate. “It’s a safe environment. You can talk to me privately about challenges or troubles accomplishing your goals.”
According to Wingate, participants will receive daily tips on how to realistically improve personal health through minor lifestyle adjustments. Because the program is conducted online, participants will be required to complete daily check-ins and progress updates. For those who prefer in-person instruction, the health department and YMCA are registered PreventT2 providers.
Wingate is a certified health coach and personal trainer with a bachelor’s degree in dietetics. Along with coaching PreventT2, Wingate offers boot-camp fitness classes, fitness and nutrition coaching, and corporate wellness courses.
