It may take up to six months, but Captain D’s Seafood restaurant on Versailles Road plans to eventually reopen after an early-morning fire Tuesday caused significant structural damage to the building.

“The norm for these kinds of things is three to six months,” Captain D’s Area Director Jessie Benavides said, adding that insurance representatives had inspected the damage. “Of course, the sooner the better.”

The fire, spotted by a passerby around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, is believed to have started from a malfunctioning refrigerator/freezer in the attic, according to Frankfort Fire Chief Wayne Briscoe.

Although 16 firefighters from Frankfort Fire stations 1, 2 and 4 had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes, the HVA system and electrical wiring in the attic made it more difficult for firefighters to locate the fire’s source.

No one was in the restaurant at the time.
