With winter well underway and the first snow of the season having fallen, a reader submitted this question after witnessing a pedestrian walking in the street downtown because sidewalks were snow-covered.

According to staff at City of Frankfort Department of Public Works, it is the responsibility of property and business owners to keep sidewalks and utility strips clear of snow and ice.

However, it is not just winter precipitation that must be cleared from the walkways. Property and business owners also are to clean trash, debris, leaves and branches, according to Ordinance 91.21.

Utility strips and sidewalks are to be maintained at the owner’s expense.

There are a few chances for wintry precipitation in the coming days. The National Weather Service forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of snow showers Friday night into Saturday with temperatures only reaching 36. There is 40 percent chance of a wintry mix Saturday night into Sunday. Saturday night’s lows are expected in the 20s with Sunday’s high projected to be around 40 degrees.
