Dear editor,

The State Journal editorial “Another Independence Day reminded anew of nation's founding principles” (Friday, July 5) was a little askew for today’s world we live in, it seems.

Phrases like “Few would trade our system for any other in the world” and “All men are created equal” and “self government” and “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” sound strange today.

We have single-party government and “obstructionist” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell leading the Republican Party — which is directed by our “wanna-be dictator,” President Donald Trump — who are putting themselves above others.

They are criminalizing immigrants looking for asylum — looking for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. They are separating children from their parents and imprisoning them.

I think we did trade systems.
